We all know that cleansing is an essential first step in any skincare routine - but it turns out, that a quick cleanse and rinse isn’t going to cut it if we want to remove all the gunk and grime off our skin after a long day.
What’s the point of a double cleanse?
We’ve all wondered this. Two steps at the end of the day may seem tedious, but according to our Ultra Skin Experts, double cleansing is a must - and when our experts say it’s a must, we rinse and repeat.
Double cleansing is essentially a two-step process; the first cleanse will remove surface impurities including makeup, dirt, oil or sunscreen sitting on top of the skin. The second cleanse ensures anything that wasn’t removed in the first round is washed down the drain. Think: stubborn makeup and pore-clogging impurities that are left on the skin.
The end goal is to ensure your pores are properly cleansed to support your skin's barrier, allowing better absorption of products which means that your skin can better protect itself from environmental stressors - win.
When’s the right time to double cleanse?
Typically, double cleansing is reserved for the evening. It ensures the skin is thoroughly cleansed from daily dirt, oil, makeup and sunscreen. Plus, it will leave your pores squeaky clean, ready to absorb your very impressive line-up of skincare (your Ultraceuticals corrective serums, eye cream and moisturiser, ideally).
Our experts suggest avoiding the second cleanse in the morning as overwashing may leave you feeling dry or dehydrated, so it’s best to not overdo it.
That doesn’t mean you need to skip a morning cleanse entirely. While we sleep, our skin can accumulate oil, sweat and pollutants from our environment, bedding, and pillows. Your daily skincare deserves to really shine - too. We delve into this more in another article, Cleansing 101: How To Nail The First Step In Your Skincare Routine.
Should I be using two different cleansers?
If you’re wearing makeup, our experts recommend cleansing first with a gentle cleansing water. Our pick? Ultra B² Micellar Cleansing Water - an all-in-one cleansing water that thoroughly removes impurities and makeup on the face, lips and eyes without stripping the skin. Your second cleanse should be with a cleanser appropriate for your skin type.
Using the same cleanser twice is fine too. Just remember to opt for a formula that provides your skin with the ingredients it needs to feel nourished, refreshed and perfectly balanced. Luckily, we’ve done the hard part for you. Read this article to find the right cleanser for your skin type.
